THE SAVVY DRIVER DRIVES THE TOYOTA SUPRA

The Icon Returns

Texas Auto Writers Association journalists named the 2021 Supra 3.0 Performance Vehicle of Texas.

The return of the Toyota Supra made automotive history. Some of the first buyers were Supra drivers in their teens and fans of the Fast and the Furious movie that featured the 1994 model.
Designed and built in partnership with BMW, the new Supra shares much of its chassis and powertrain with the BMW Z4 for crisp handling and an exhilarating drive experience while it garners much attention for its own distinct sports styling.
Our first experience driving the new Supra at Texas Motor Speedway allowed us full appreciation of its performance capabilities, while our recent week-long test drive allowed us to evaluate it on the street. We drove the 2021 model with a rear-wheel-drive turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six delivering 382 horsepower. The other engine choice, new for 2021, is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four making 255 horsepower. Either makes all the sounds that the sports enthusiast yearns for, yet Toyota technology and the Supra’s light 3181-pound curb weight earn it a truly remarkable average of 25 mpg for the bigger engine and 27 mpg on the four cylinder.
Consistently ranking at the top of the mid-priced sports cars, the Supra with 3.0 Premium had an MSRP of $54,490. Revised suspension tuning, helping it feel more confident on and off the track, is an included upgrade in addition to larger rear brakes, heated seats and full leather upholstery, a touchscreen 8.8-inch infotainment display with navigation, wireless smartphone charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility,12-speaker JBL audio system and head-up display. With add-ons including carbon fiber mirror caps, carpet cargo mats, wheel locks, the Driver Assist package and a special matte storm grey paint color the sum total of our test car, with delivery, was $59,295.
OK, it’s a sports car adapted for street driving. While it’s one of the better choices in cabin fit and finish over some of the other contenders, we wouldn’t go so far as to call it a comfy ride. But if you like turning heads and going 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, the Supra is worth considering.
