1st Generation 1964 ½ – 1973
The Mustang’s original engine lineup included the little-known German Taunus V4 in the concept phase. It was later abandoned for production models that ranged from a modest inline-6 up to several V8 options.
2nd Generation 1974-1978
Reflecting the economic pressures of the fuel efficiency era, the second gen Mustang was built on a Pinto platform. And it featured smaller, more fuel-efficient engines. The initial engine options were a 2.3-liter four-cylinder and a 2.8-liter V6. A 4.9-liter V8 was later reintroduced in 1975, but only with automatic transmission.
3rd Generation 1979-1993
More muscle was a focus, with a renewed rear-wheel-drive Fox platform and unibody chassis designed for compact and mid-sized vehicles. Third gen Mustang engines included the 2.3L four-cylinder, 2.8L V6, and rebranded 5.0 L V8 (302). A short-lived 2.3L turbo option also surfaced.
4th Generation 1994-2004
Modular V8s returned. Marked by the SN‑95 redesign, these Mustangs revived the 5.0L V8. They were later replaced by the 4.6L modular V8—all carrying the muscle lineage forward.
5th Generation 2005 – 2014
With a design nod to the original Mustang, this era brought back classic Shelby variants with ferocious power—Shelby GT500 and GT500KR models topped out near 662 hp from a 5.0L V8
6th Generation 2015 – 2023
The 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder was introduced, expanding Mustang’s market with efficient yet potent performance. Meanwhile, the Coyote 5.0L V8 continued powering modern GTs and the Shelby GT350R packed a fierce 5.2L flat-plane V8—revving higher and producing 526 hp—tailored for racing dynamics and shedding excess weight.
Mustang received a major refresh in 2018 with revised front/rear styling, digital dash, performance upgrades. Moving from a live rear axle to independent rear suspension dramatically improved handling, ride comfort, and global appeal. But it was still considered part of the sixth-gen S550 platform—Mustang’s first global Mustang platform, engineered to be sold worldwide with both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations.
7th Generation 2024 – Present
The seventh gen Mustang, also known as the S650, offers a broad performance spectrum—from an efficient four-cylinder to thunderous V8 power. An updated rear-wheel drive 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, delivers 315 hp with improved fuel delivery on the new Mustang. (Learn more: Evolution of Ford’s Eco-Boost Engines) And Ford continues championing the classic rear-wheel-drive V8 Mustang soul with the signature Coyote 5.0LV8 available in the GT and Dark Horse trims.
The GT produces up to 486 hp with optional performance exhaust. And the track-focused Dark Horse variant offers the highest performance ever in a street-legal 5.0L V8 Mustang with 500 hp, adaptive dampers, and optional handling package. It’s available with either a Tremec six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford is producing a limited number of the Dark Horse Mustangs, potentially making it a future collectible.
Improving the ride and handling balance was a key focus for the new generation. Enhanced handling dynamics, with available features like MagneRide suspension and quicker steering ratios, lend a more agile and responsive driving experience. A new electronic drift brake, developed with Vaughn Gittin Jr., is available with the Performance pack.
A significantly upgraded, technology-centric interior with a digital fighter jet-inspired cockpit and advanced driver-assistance features, represents a notable leap forward in cabin design and infotainment.
