The late 2000s saw a downturn in the global economy, fluctuating gas prices, and increased pressure to meet stricter Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards. Ford, known for its gas-guzzling trucks like the F-Series, needed a solution to address these concerns and appeal to a changing consumer base.
EcoBoost Engines First Debuted Around 2009
The goal was to combine turbocharging, direct fuel injection, and Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti‑VCT) to deliver V8-level power with better efficiency and lower emissions. The first model rolled out in 2010. The 1.0 L EcoBoost was designed to be exceptionally compact, its block was the size of an A4 (letter size) sheet of paper. It used clever flywheel engineering to counterbalance three‑cylinder vibrations.
The 2.0 L EcoBoost and 3.5 L EcoBoost (Twin-Turbo V6) also premiered in 2010. The 2.0 L engine got an update later with a twin-scroll turbo for quicker low‑RPM response and reduced lag. It remains widely used across Ford models, including the Bronco Sport (Badlands trim) and the Maverick pickup. Later revisions to the 3.5 L added features like port fuel injection and start-stop technology. The second generation 3.5 L EcoBoost was introduced in 2017. It pushed output in models like the F‑150 to 375 hp—or up to 450 hp in the Raptor.

2.3 L and 2.7 L EcoBoost Engines Launched in 2015
The 2.3 L grew out of the 2.0 L architecture. It added both direct and port fuel injection—referred to as Modular Power Cylinder (MPC) tech. In the light-duty Ranger pickup, it’s tuned for about 270 hp and 310 lb-ft.
And the Ford 2.7L EcoBoost engine premiered in the 2015 model year F-150. It was designed to offer a balance of power and fuel efficiency. This engine is now also used in other Ford vehicles like the Ford Edge, Explorer, Aviator, Ranger Raptor, and Bronco Raptor. It features an aluminum head, compacted graphite iron block, DOHC layout, and Ti‑VCT.
Year of the Dragon
The 1.5‑L turbocharged inline‑3 EcoBoost, known as the “Dragon” engine, launched in 2017. Ford unveiled with the launch of the seventh-generation Ford Fiesta ST. This engine was a completely new design, not a derivative of the previous 1.5-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost debuting in 2014 in the Ford Fusion. The 1.5 L is still used in international markets today.
The Dragon features a dual overhead cam (DOHC) design. It incorporates such advanced technologies as cylinder deactivation, direct and port fuel injection, and lightweight aluminum construction. The Dragon is the standard engine on trims like Big Bend, Heritage, Free Wheeling™, and Outer Banks® in the 2025 Bronco Sport lineup. It delivers approximately 180 hp and around 190–200 lb‑ft of torque. Under the hood, this engine features a Ti‑VCT (Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing). It’s constructed with an aluminum block and cylinder head. It utilizes both direct and port fuel injection, and includes auto start-stop technology for better fuel efficiency. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, it offers smooth and efficient performance.
Fast Forward to the 2021 PowerBoost Hybrid
The PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6, available on mid- and upper-trims on the F-150 pickup, was first introduced in the 2021 model year. It combines the twin‑turbocharged 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 with an electric motor/generator and a 1.5 kWh lithium‑ion battery pack for a hybrid setup yielding 430 hp and 570 lb‑ft of torque.
What’s Next?
Ford has started pairing its proven EcoBoost turbocharged engines, like the 2.3 L four-cylinder, with advanced electric drive systems and high-capacity lithium-ion batteries.
Just launched for European markets, the 2.3 L EcoBoost plug-in hybrid enables all-electric operation for short trips and seamless hybrid performance for longer journeys. The plug-in hybrid system delivers responsive acceleration and impressive fuel savings, making it especially well-suited for urban environments and emissions-conscious regions. With regenerative braking, selectable drive modes, and integration into Ford’s latest connectivity features, it sets a new benchmark for versatility and sustainability in the midsize segment. It’s a direction Ford is likely to continue and expand to other models and engine sizes.
