Empowering North Texas to Rise Above the Challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease

AWARE Celebrates 35 Years

AWARE is dedicated to fighting Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. It does so by providing funding and support to programs, projects, and research provided by other nonprofit organizations that actively help individuals affected by Alzheimer’s in the greater North Texas area.  Many of AWARE’s members navigate the challenges of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, either themselves, or as caregivers and professionals in the field.

In partnership with the Dallas Foundation, AWARE awards grants, through an annual review process, to research institutions at the forefront of medical research in the treatment, prevention, and cure of Alzheimer’s disease. Since AWARE’s founding in 1989 by a group of volunteers, the Dallas-based organization has invested more than $14 million in local providers, researchers and innovators fighting for our loved ones and a cure. Every dollar that AWARE grants stays in North Texas to benefit the local community.

Event Opportunities for AWARE Members

AWARE plans a March 12 luncheon featuring speaker Steve Benton, of The Senior Source. He presents “Elder Frauds, Scams and Financial Exploitation.”

A May luncheon features Meridan Zerner, MS, RDN, CSSD, LD, CHWC Cooper Clinic Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. She speaks on “The Longevity Recipe: Wellness for Mind and Body.”

Beyond generous donations from its membership, the organization’s major fundraiser is AWARE Affair.  The non-profit hosted a kick-off event in October to celebrate 35 years of AWARE and announce details of the 2025 AWARE Affair event, Boots, Buckles & Brain Health, scheduled for Friday, April 4, 2025 at Gilley’s Dallas.  There, Event Chair David McDavid, Jr., spoke with great emotion about the loss of his wife Kimberly, who passed away at age 60 last March after a brave fight with early-onset Alzheimer’s.

Visit awaredallas.org for information about joining Friends of AWARE, attending its annual signature fundraiser or making a donation.
