About Building Savvy

People Pursuing Passions

Beverly & Steve Smirnis first starting publishing a magazine for the North Texas home building industry in 1992 and then introduced Building Savvy to their loyal audience in 2003. We are long-time members of the Greater Fort Worth and Dallas Builders Associations (GFWBA and DBA), twice earning Associate of the Year from the Fort Worth association. Steve served for more than a decade on the GFWBA Board of Directors and Beverly served several years on DBA’s board. We have also enjoyed a long relationship with the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI)’s North Texas chapter.

The Smirnis team can’t recall a single year in their history with the industry that they haven’t attended the National Association of Builders (NAHB)’s International Builders Show. They have served as judges for that show and also enjoy judging for various home parade events for other builders associations across the country.

Brian Kalchman

In 2019, Terry Kemmy helped us launch a San Antonio Building Savvy edition. He subsequently launched a second separate edition for the Texas Hill Country. When Terry left San Antonio, he sold his edition to Brian Kalchman who continues to assist us with the San Antonio edition and the Hill Country edition, which is now expanded into the Austin/Texas Hill Country Edition.

Building Savvy Now Texas Wide!

It has been a long-time dream to be Texas-wide! Most recently, the Smirnis team launched the Houston edition of Building Savvy to accomplish that dream. We look forward to getting more involved with the other builders associations and NARI chapters across the state as we now expand.

Comprehensive Reach

We wholeheartedly support the important work that the local, state and national chapters of NAHB and NARI do. But since we are independently operated, we deliver unbiased news from all the various audience segments. This includes the membership of all professional groups in each city as well as those hard-to-reach builders who are not members or actively engaged with any particular association. We have long been considered the most comprehensive way to reach home builders, home remodelers, residential designers and architects and neighborhood developers.

Raising the Bar

A Savvy builder is one who is tuned into important legislation and legal updates. Savvy builders take pride in implementing best practices. They seek to stay relevant with forward-thinking philosophies and keen insights to what their buyers seek.

Our print and digital publications help keep our audience Savvy! And our e-newsletters and social media promote all of our collected content.

Building Savvy’s education classes bring together thought leaders to share ideas and ask questions of our expert presenters.

Going Green

As part of our commitment to environmental sustainability, Building Savvy is proud to announce our transition from traditional paper publications to digital formats. This strategic shift reflects our own dedication to the message we consistently preach to our audience—Now is the time to reduce our ecological footprint!

At the same time, we do not count paper copies as waste for those of you have religiously read Building Savvy for years and newcomers who may also wish to read and keep publications to refer back to.  We want to continue sending copies free of charge to our core audience who make the effort to request our print publications.  So please SUBSCRIBE and let us know your preferred delivery method.

If you are requesting print circulation, we encourage you to also stay subscribed to receive our email news including links to additional information related to the content in the printed publications and announcements about Building Savvy education events.

Expanded Reach

The digital age allows us to continually identify and add audience members. And it allows us to send digital copies to the many industry members who serve our key audience–the suppliers and service providers to the home building industry. Some of them support us with their sponsorships; many have done so year after year! And several have now added the new Building Savvy editions to their campaign strategies.

The Savvy List

Building Savvy remains its own entity, but housing our posts and blogs here under the same umbrella allows consumers who wish to learn more about our industry to eavesdrop on some of our conversations. We can easily share information to help homebuyers (particularly those many who are moving to our great state of Texas) learn about how we build in Texas.

Helping consumers understand why we do certain things as Texas homebuilders is important as it may be a bit different from wherever they originally hail from. Those seeking to buy a new home or remodel an existing one can appreciate our content about home product trends and design insights. And it is our pleasure to introduce People Pursuing Passions to other People Pursuing Passions in the homebuilding industry!
