The Alfa Romeo Tonale, all-new for 2023, marked the new entry point to the Alfa Romeo lineup in the United States. The 2024 Tonale Plug-In Hybrid continues to put all driving options on the table.
Tonale’s engineers anticipate that drivers will frequently charge their Tonale to save on gas. So it’s designed to fully charge in 2.5 hours with a Level 2 (240-volt) power source. In Drive Mode A (EV-only), it offers 30 miles of all-electric driving. And when it reaches its top electric-only speed of 75 mph, there’s a noticeable detent in the throttle. The driver can choose to either push past it to turn the gas engine. Or easing up keeps it moving solely on battery power.
A Mode for Any Mood
The standard driving mode N (Natural) starts out using the electric motor. Then, it taps the turbocharged 1.3-liter four-cylinder engine in second gear to drive the front wheels. Meanwhile, the 121-horsepower electric motor continues to power the rear wheels. Next, try shifting to D (Dual Power) mode. This turns on Tonale’s High regenerative braking level. Simultaneously, its suspension firms up to make optimum use of both the engine and electric motor. Then, you’re off for spirited 285 horsepower driving.
Tonale Adds Italian-Style Flash and Flair to Its Segment
Tonale comes in a variety of colors, including a signature deep green called Verde Fangio Metallic. Indeed, in Alfa Romeo tradition, Tonale lives up to the task of adding some Italian fashion flair into the fray of subcompact luxury crossovers. And though it is six inches shorter than Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio, Tonale receives accolades for providing generous legroom in the back. This makes it a great family choice among the subcompact SUV choices.
Entry level Tonales start at $44,950 including standard all-wheel-drive. Our tester was the top level Veloce decked out with special wheels and tires, an Active Drive Assist Advanced package, paint, leather and sound system upgrades plus destination totaling $57,450.
Having driving options is nice! And the 2024 Tonale proves that it is possible to have them all!
